When Carol and I were traveling, one of our daughters recommended “Dreamland Bar-B-Que” as the best restaurant in Montgomery for BBQ. It was a great recommendation.

In 1958, John Big Daddy Bishop opened his first Dreamland Café. Dreamland has a fun and welcoming atmosphere. We did not realize we were about to be reminded of an important lesson in life.

We were warmly greeted by a wonderful server, Bridgett Rose. Carol asked if she was paid enough. Rose answered, “I pay myself.”
“Are you an owner?” we asked.
“No. Most of my pay is from tips and it’s my job to make sure you have an enjoyable experience” was her reply.
Important Lesson
Rose took full responsibility for her role. She clearly liked people and was very engaging. She made our experience very special. I am sure she paid herself very well — as she said she did.
Most of us have the opportunity to find a way to enjoy what we do. We can see ourselves as “self-employed” and providing service to others. Rose was a delightful example.
